The renowned journal Laser Focus World awards GOLD honors to optical parametric amplifier Orpheus-MIR from manufacturer Light Conversion. Every year, the Innovators Awards are assigned by a panel of experts to the most innovative products and solutions in optics and photonics.
The optical parametric amplifier (OPA) delivers broadband pulses in mid-infrared and enables investigation of new research questions in the field of spectroscopy. Orpheus-MIR is based on a two channel OPA system with subsequent noncollinear difference frequency generation (DFG).
Previously, Ti:Sapphire-pumped OPAs like Topas were used for broadband femtosecond laser applications in IR. However, this method is limited to low repetition rates <10 kHz. Orpheus-MIR enables repetition rates up to 2 MHz and stands out by its high average output power, excellent short-term and long-term stability and improved reliability and usability.
The laser system generates broadband pulses with bandwidth up to >800 cm-1 in the tuning range from 2.5 to 10 µm at pulse durations <100 fs. A narrow bandwidth extension option increases the tuning range to 15 µm. Typical scientific applications are broadband Sum Frequency Generation spectroscopy (SFG), Time and Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) and High-Harmonic Generation (HHG).
