06.01.2021 | High Repetition Rate, 15 TW OPCPA Laser System for European Research Project ELI-ALPS
The Lithuanian laser manufacturers Ekspla and Light Conversion signed a contract to build a new OPCPA laser system for the European research center ELI-ALPS (Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source). The system will deliver 15 TW peak power at 1 kHz repetition rate and <8 fs pulse duration in extreme UV range (XUV / X-ray). Installation of the 6 Mio Euro project SYLOS3 is scheduled for 2022. It will provide 3 times higher average and peak power than the successfully realized previous system SYLOS2A.
The used OPCPA technology (Optical Parametric Chirped-Pulse Amplification) to generate extremely short pulses with high intensity offers substantial advantages over older methods (Ti:Sapphire) in terms of pump efficiency, pulse contrast and bandwidth, and consequently, improved quality of the generated radiation. Unique feature of the SYLOS lasers is the high repetition rate of 1 kHz. Other currently available TW systems operate at single shot or low repetition rate. The system will deliver pulses with 120 mJ with CEP stability of ≤250 mrad and pulse energy stability of ≤1%. This allows for scientific experiments with extremely demanding stability requirements.
The exceptionally high XUV/X-ray pulse energy at high 1 kHz repetition rate opens up entirely new fields of research in nonlinear X-ray research, 4D imaging and other industrial, biological or medical applications.
