Q2-HE Series - Q-switched Air-Cooled High Energy Lasers

Q2-HE air-cooled, Q-switched, diode pumped lasers are designed for applications that require high peak power. Due to the short laser cavity and good thermal properties, the laser delivers up to 120 mJ at < 6 - 7 ns and repetition rates up to 100 Hz. This laser is an ideal and robust tool for applications like Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), remote sensing or laser ablation.

Quantum Light Instruments Ltd. innovative water-free laser crystal cooling technology enables generation of high quality laser beam with up to 120 mJ pulse energy and/or up to 4 W average output power.
Q2HE series sets new standard in Q-switched laser market. Advanced laser design resulted in compact, user-friendly turnkey system that requires little maintenance. There is no chillers or bulky power supplies that one needs fit under the table. Most of laser electronics is integrated into housing of the Q2HE and the only external modules are compact controller box and mains adapter that provides 28 VDC, 50-150 W power (depending on model).
Less than 7 ns pulse duration and low divergence of the beam enables efficient fundamental wavelength conversion to higher harmonics with shortest wavelength available of 211 nm.
Low jitter triggering pulses for user equipment are available in internal triggering mode. If required, laser pulsing can be externally triggered from delay generator.
Laser is controlled trough Ethernet port via build-in web-server. There is no need to install control software – any computer or even cell phone with modern web-browser installed will be able to control Q2HE. API is provided for integration with user devices.

Harmonic generator SHG

SHG is compact second harmonic generator module is designed to be attached to our Q2 or Q2HE series lasers.

SHG has two exit ports that can be factory-configured in several ways. Standard configurations are listed in the table below. Second harmonic beam can be configured to be coaxial with fundamental beam (SHG-0 option) or can be separated from fundamental by build-in dichroic mirrors (SHG-1 and SHG-2 options).

When supplied together with Q2/Q2HE series laser, status of SHG can be remotely monitored and controlled from laser control panel (PC is required). Our pulse energy monitor of EM series can be attached to the exit port with digital or analog readout of pulse energy value.

Most of high performance birefringent crystals are hygroscopic, which might limit their lifetime in humid environment. However, if they are continuously kept at higher than ambient temperatures, the lifetime of crystals can be significantly extended and can be even longer than laser system itself. To keep crystals dry, SHG module needs to be always connected to the laser controller. If powering is not available, the module should be stored in dry environment.

H-SMART is stand-alone automated harmonic generator module designed to be used with our Q2 and Q2HE series lasers. Module is intended to be mounted side-by-side with laser on common optical table or breadboard.
H-SMART has three exit ports that can be factory-configured to emit up to 5th harmonic wavelengths. Most common exit port standard configurations are listed in the “Exit port configuration options” table below. Custom configurations are available by request.

Motorized attenuators

  • Drop-in attachable to the laser body attenuators for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th harmonics of Nd:YAG or Nd:YLF lasers.
  • Up to 98% maximum transmission.
  • Precise transmission control by stepper motor in microstepping mode (12800 steps/rotation).
  • Transmission adjustment accuracy <0.15%.
  • Remote control via common with laser Ethernet interface.
  • Optional stand-alone version for mounting on optical table.
  • Optional side port transforms attenuator to variable beam splitter.

Pulse energy of our Q-switched lasers can be conveniently lowered from maximum value by reducing current of pump diode. When less pump light is stored in lasing media, laser emits pulses with lower energy.

Above described method of pulse energy attenuation has its pros and cons. It is cost-effective, simple to implement, however, pulse energy change affects also other important laser beam parameters like pulse-to-pulse stability, beam divergence, pulse duration. For example, pulse-to-pulse energy stability of harmonics wavelengths might be more than 2 times worse at lower than nominal fundamental pulse energy.

AT series attenuators allows to attenuate laser pulse energy without changes in beam parameters.Attenuator consist of polarizer and waveplate. By changing of input beam polarization, transmission of beam can be changed for maximum to minimum value. Minimum transmission value depends on input beam polarization state and polarizer extinction ratio and typically is approx. 1 %.

Maximum possible transmission is determined by reflection and absorption losses of optical components. Several attenuators can be used in series if larger dynamic range is required. Attenuator transmission can be controlled trough common with laser Ethernet interface. API is provided for integration into user software.
